A Faint Arc of Light

Lunar Eclipse - December 10, 2011
Lunar Eclipse - December 10, 2011

Aloha,

I got up at 3:50 am this morning – crystal clear skies & not too cold, maybe 50 degrees, out on my deck with my 7×50 binocular. At that time the moon looked like a 25% crescent with the remaining body visible. At 4:10 it was so lovely, just a faint SW arc of light still on the moon & the shadow a dark dusty orange. The sky became dark enough to see stars around the moon – an eerie sight. At ~4:45 the eclipse appeared complete but clouds were coming in & it was even difficult to see the outline but I could still make out nearby stars. The moon just disappeared in totality and was difficult to locate without binocular aid.

Eclipsed Moon

Lunar Eclipse - December 10, 2011
Lunar Eclipse - December 10, 2011

Hi!
This is my sketch of the Lunar Eclipse. In Poland the initial phase and the main phase of the eclipse was impossible to observe. But we could watch the final phase of the eclipse.
This sketch shows the Moon coming out from the shadow of the Earth.

Objects: Moon – Lunar Eclipse
Date: December 10, 2011
Time: About 16:25 – 16:35 (4:25 – 4:35 PM)
Place: Nowy SÄ…cz, Poland
Equipment: Binoculars Bresser 10×50
Conditions: faint fog, light pollution.
Technique: Pastels on navy blue art paper. Correction and tooling with GIMP2
Author: Aleksander Cieśla (Wimmer)

Dumbbell Nebula

Messier 27
Messier 27

Object Name: M27
Object Type: Planetary nebula
Location: Chybie, Poland
Date: 17.08.2011
Media: graphite pencil, digital tools

I used 8″ F5 dobson, 13 mm Vixen LVW eyepiece, and UHC-S filter.
Conditions were good, transparency was excellent , limiting magnitude
was 5.8 but seeing wasn’t that great.

La Lagune

Messier 8
Messier 8

Hello,

Here is a m8 sketch I made this summer.

It was the first and last time I observed this nebula (because I observed it early and here, in Quebec, we don’t have good sky every day !).

I was alone with the radio in a blue-berry field, at Dolbeau. I remember… I saw Sagittarius constellation I and took my ipod to see which object I could see in this region… Nebulae and nebulae it had on my app ! I decided immediately to spot one of them with my 10 inch scope.

The Lagoon Nebulae

Without OIII, I easily saw the stellar cluster (NGC 6530) and I notice some nebulosity. But when I put the OIII filter… it was outstanding ! It first look like a cat footprint… My field of view did no allow me to see the entire nebulae. I wasn’t no anything about this nebulae this night and it was the main reason I drew it: When I came home and compare my sketch with picture I was just too happy 😛

Object Name: The Lagoon nebula, m8
Object Type: Emission nebulae with stellar cluster
Location: Dolbeau-Mistassini, Quebec, Canada
Date June 26-27 2011
Media: HB sketch pencil and shder brush
Instrument: Skywatcher 10 inch, 1200mm of focal length
Eyepiece: Celestron Ultima LX 13mm + Lumicon OIII filter

Allround Sketches – Featuring M13

Messier 13
Messier 13

– Object Name: Allround Sketches
– Object Type: Deepsky
– Location: Lith, the Netherlands
– Date: 22-10-2011
– Media: black pencil on with paper / PS CS5

The sky was pretty clear last week. There were two nights that I was able to observe the night sky from our backyard.
I made on the second night (22-10-’11) a few allround sketches from some of my favorite objects.

Here below you’ll see three sketches I have made:

Messier 13
M13: Globular Starcluster in Hercules. This object was very nice visible through the telescope (130/900) and the binoculars (10×50).

M45 in Taurus. A beautiful starformation that was very impressive through the binoculars.

Aldebaran & Hyads in Taurus: Also a very nice formation. These type of objects are best visible through widefield lenses or binoculars.

Thanks for watching!

Jupiter Comparison

Jupiter - November 12, 2011
Jupiter - November 12, 2011

Jupiter is the fifth planet from the Sun and the largest planet within
the Solar System. It is a gas giant with mass one-thousandth that of
the Sun but is two and a half times the mass of all the other planets
in our Solar System combined. Jupiter is classified as a gas giant
along with Saturn, Uranus and Neptune. This is my second sketch of
Jupiter and in my opinion version 2 is much better ;). I draw this
picture using graphite pencil on white sheet of paper but I inverted
it Gimp, added colors, halo etc. Because of that modifications I think
this sketch can be determinate as digital picture too. In the bottom
left corner of sketch I added real astrophoto of Jupiter to compare it
with my sketch ,visual observation.

Object: Name Jupiter
Object Type: Planet
Location: Starogard Gdański, Poland

I hope you enjoy

Clear sky for all
