The Sun from Trondheim City

Hey!

I send you an observation of the sun seen in H-alfa. The sun was seen between drifting clouds.
There was most activity near the south-western limb. This sketch is raw and directly made at
the telescope.
I was home to a friend with a 50 mm refractor just outside Trondheim city, Norway.
I used white paper, graphite and colour pencil.
This is my first try to sketch the sun seen in H-alfa.
Hope you like it!

Best wishes from Per-Jonny Bremseth.

Jupiter Showing Off Its Spot

Jupiter Showing Off Its Spot

Sketch and Details by Serge Vieillard

At an Astronomy gathering (Astrociel Valdrôme 2010) to view the deep sky early in the night, the second part of the night became a time for pointing at planet Jupiter as the atmosphere settles down.
Serge writes: [roughly translated]
“Jupiter introduces a new aspect, with his well shaded off Northern equatorial belt, which further emphasizes the great red spot in a very original way. … four color drawing were made directly at the eyepiece of the 460mm telescope with some supplementation using the 600mm scope over two nights (August 11 and 12, 2010).”
Here are two of those sketches.

Distant Andromeda

The Andromeda Galaxy & Companion Messier 32

August 11th, 2010

Location: Connecticut, USA (in an orange/red zone)

Drawn with black, grey, and white graphite colored pencil on white paper, with a black uni-ball pen for stars. Photographed with a Panasonic DMC-TZ3 and imported to Photoshop for inverting and touchups.

At time of drawing transparency was below average and so I really had to work hard to eke out any semblance of detail in M31. Aperture helped – I used a 203mm Newtonian for this drawing, even so, the one dust lane was only visible with averted vision. You may notice a strange lack of stars in the field, there are two reasons behind this: one is that too many stars become a distraction and two is that I generally only use them as reference points for my sketch.

Sparkling Lagoon

-Black and grey colored pencil on white paper, black uni-ball pen to accentuate stars, and eraser to help smudge nebulosity. Drawing photographed with Panasonic DMC-TZ3 and imported to Photoshop for inverting, and slight blurring to “nebulize” the actual emissions while keeping stars intact.

Observed in an orange/yellow zone with a 203mm Newtonian. M8 was sketched as seen with a Lumicon UHC filter which created an extremely noticeable improvement in the extent of the region’s nebulosity. Transparency was judged to be about a seven out of ten.

The interacting galaxies NGC 4038/4039 are always good value in any size
telescope.

In the 56cm dob there was subtle detail visible without using averted
vision, I just wished the sky conditions were a bit better on the night.

The the protruding “Antennae” that are so spectacular in images were not
visible (which is not surprising).

When you look at the magnificent HST image of this object with all its
associated colours, and then look at the object in a large aperture dob
at fairly high magnification, its shape and form is not too dissimilar.

Dessin de Jupiter

!

Bonjour,

Christian Gros

Hello,

I join(contact) you a drawing of Jupiter realized in the morning of last July 28th.
I was lucky to take advantage of excellent conditions which allowed me to draw the gaseous giant in good conditions and celà until dawn! For celà I used my telescope 180 in going swellings of x196 in x360.
The drawing was made for coloured pencils.

Whenever Virgo is well placed in the southern sky I always try and tick
a few more objects off my observing list.

I noticed an interesting group of galaxies as I was checking my charts,
and I marked them down for observation.
I was most impressed when I finally managed to get them in the eyepiece
of the 56cm dob.

It is quite a rare treat to have so many bright galaxies gathered
together in the one field.

I have included a duplicate reference sketch with details.
Hopefully I have got all the designations correct.

TeleVue 76mm Apo Refractor

Field: 128′

Last November I went to visit my sister who lives Cairns in
Queensland.

My travel scope is a TeleVue 76mm Apo and it fits into a large
duffle bag, along with the Telepod mount and drum stool, eyepieces
etc.
It stows well for airline travel.

We hired a car at Cairns and took a trip to outback Queensland and
the mining town of Chillagoe
We stayed at the Eco Lodge resort and Observatory which was rather
comfortable considering it is made up of ex mining dongas.

The Lodge had an observatory/shed which housed a C-8, in front of
which was a nice flat dry and dusty expanse where I set up my scope
for what
turned out to be two nights of clear skies.

Lots of nightlife punctuated my observing as creatures scurried
about and argued amongst the trees.

I completed three sketches out at Chillagoe, one of which was NGC
55. This large galaxy looks good even in a very wide field using
low magnification.

Eclipse of Luna

Hey!

I send you “eclipse of Luna”.
This eclipse was one of the finest in many years seen from Norway.
I made many sketches of this eclipse.
On photos the moon turns red, but visually you can better see
different colours!
The star 53 Geminorum occulted later during the eclipse!
I used colour pencils on white paper for the moon, and this on
black background.

The obsevation was made outside Trondheim ciy, Norway.

Thank You! From Per-Jonny Bremseth.
