Pastel on Black Paper, white pencil for the stars

Conditions on December 26th, 2011 made it so that my friend Mat and I went observing for the night in the West Desert of Utah. Conditions were clear, cold, about 15 degrees F at the time. While we were setting up there was a wonderful Sun Dog in the Western Sky which we took as a good omen and sure enough, we had a wonderful evening. I would rate the sky at an Antoniadi II this night when I sketched this object. I used my Orion XX14i, a 14 inch truss dob, a 27mm Panoptic as a finder and a 10mm Pentax XW to sketch the object. This galaxy has a very stellar nucleus with a bright inner core that is surrounded by diffusion. Nice star to the west of the galaxy and the southwest end of the galaxy tappers and thus had more detail located there. Not a particularly well known or observed galaxy, but one in the Eridanus cluster and worthy of a look if one is there. Who says winter isn’t galaxy season?

Smartphone Sketch at 2012 Australia Expedition

2012 Australia Expedition
2012 Australia Expedition

Last week’s way to work, I drew one picture about the australia expedition in 2012.

I used digital painting application in smartphone.

(Samsung Galaxy Note 2, S Note)

Eight celestial objects are in this drawing. 🙂

The surface of smartphone is very slippery.

So It is very hard to draw exquisitely.

If you want to exactly understand this picture,

please refer to below video clip.

Leo Triplet (M65, M66, NGC 3628)

Object Name: Leo Triplet (M65, M66, NGC 3628)
Object Type: Galaxies
Location: Płaza, Poland
Date: 11.03.2012
Media: graphite pencil, white paper, inverted in Photoshop CS2

In my opinion, Leo Triplet is one of the most beautiful galactic triplet on our sky. In Poland it’s a typical spring constellation. We also have Mars in it at this time.
It was my first try sketching a galaxy, but I’m pretty satisfied with my picture, so I decided to try putting it on ASOD. I hope you like it.

Markarian’s Chain

Object Name: Markarian’s Chain
Object Type: Galaxy Cluster
Location: Sketched at a dark sky sight in Wiltshire, UK
Date: 5th May 2013; 23:30; conditions – very good
Media (graphite pencil sketch at the scope and then digitized using graphics tablet and Photoshop)

I usually sketch in some detail at the scope (mainly HB and 2B). I then scanned the result into Photoshop and sharpened the sketch. I annotated the galaxies.
For this sketch I used a Nexstar 8SE teamed with a WO 32mm wide field of view eyepiece. The sketch occupied two eyepiece field of views plus a bit of edge fills for some surrounding stars.

Observing Details

I have wanted to sketch this cluster for a very long time but needed to travel out into a dark sky site to have a chance. M84 and M86 were very noticeable but, with the help of a star chart I was pleased to spot many more than can be seen from my back garden, although NGC 4413 required averted vision.

Hope you enjoy,

Clear Skies

Messier 51
Messier 51

I made this sketch of M51 with a 625mm (25″) dobson in a starparty located in the Margériaz, France.
The seeing was not really good and there was a few high clouds passes during my observation.

Object Name: M51

Object Type: Galaxy

Location: Margériaz, France

Date: 6th July 2013

Media: graphite pencil (3B, 2H and 4H) on 180g white bristol, then Photoshop CS6 for the inversion and stars processing.

Another from the early hours of morning, Arp 254 a lot going on here beyond my sketch, but knowing of the interaction taking place and seeing the start of the bridge is quite an amazing thing if you think about it!

I have a little back log of sketches that I need to get out to you, I just did this one as it was a single and I wrote the blog pretty quickly!

My equipment is a Dobson 10″ with a 25mm eyepiece. The seeing and transparency is 7/10.

Sorry for my english, this is my first sketch with my new dobson. When sketching that you see, you see more details!! It’s awesome!

The name of the sketch, “The Tango” is from… this objects are very spectecular pair on the sky, and give me a “Tango” idea.

… and sorry for my bad english 😉
