Messier 65 and 66

Hey Artists!

My sketch shows two Messier galaxies in the ocularfield, M. 65 and M. 66 in Leo
in the middle distance between Theta and Iota Leonis.
I did not get a trio with the northern galaxy, because of my smaller field in my
f/ 10 telescope. But the pair was beautiful to observe under good atmospheric
quallity!
In the last years, I can see that the weather and skyconditions gets worse and
worse. When its clear sky and cold, the sky turns grey and with turbulences.
What is happening??
More info on my sketch.
I used pencil on white paper on my sketch and inverted .

Clear sky to all. Per-Jonny Bremseth.

Many thanks for comments!!

Aloha!

One of my favorite objects to observe on dark, excellent seeing nights is M51 & companion galaxy NGC 5195. Seeing was excellent on the night of 3/19/12 & I sketched prominent features of the galaxies from the scope using a red light to see the paper. After returning inside for the night I decided to clean up my sketch & enhance some of the features I made notes on. A few nights later I went back to check on my accuracy.

Although I could see a lot of detail with my 12.5” Portaball, I realized I had over enhanced my sketch. I then stayed at the scope to remove the enhancements that were not accurate. This was a good learning experience for me. It is sometimes difficult to observe & stay dark adapted even with red light, and my visual acuity isn’t what it once was. In the future I plan to sketch, make notes, clean up the sketch with better light but then return to the subject to verify what I have truly observed.

Hello,

I send you the last sketch I made.

Because of the winter and school, two months passed during I didn’t go outside to observe the sky ! To much time without observing. This night, I had the time and, trought the window, sky seemed clear. Then I got out with my 10 inch telescope, enter in the car and… notice it was foggy in my city. Then I tried to find a place without fog. I found the place.

Leo triplet

Because the wet weather, before I pointed m66 group with my 25mm plössl, I was sure I would see nothing, but, surprise ! I saw m66, m65 and, when I took care, NGC 3628 below, all I the same field of view. I cannot resist to the tentation to draw them. Then I jump in the car to get my sketch equipment. I zoomed with my 13mm Celestron LX to get better view for details. But, one of the must pleasure I had, it was to compare the sketch with picture after at home and notice that my star was approximatelly at the good place 😛

It was the first time I observed them. Sky condition was poor. I wonder wath they will look like with good sky condition and with bigger telescope !!

A Small Meeting in Leo

Mars, Messier 95 and 96
Mars, Messier 95 and 96

Hi,

In attachment you can find sketch of extraordinary event on the sky – “conjuction” of Mars and two galaxies M95 & M96

Short description:

Object Name: Mars, Messier 95, Messier 96
Object Type: planet, two spiral galaxies
Location: Budy Dłutowskie – small village in central Poland
Date: 17.03.2012
Media: graphite pencil, white paper, color invert
Telescope: Columbus 320UL (320/1384 Newtonian) + Orion Q70 26mm
Seeing: 4/5 (poor)
Transparency: 4/5 (poor)
NELM: 5,2 mag

Two days ago I had opportiunity to observe very rare event on the sky – Mars “met” two spiral galaxies M95 & M96. Galaxies were really hard to observe because Mars was really really bright. I didn’t notice any details inside galaxies but the whole view in large FOV was really impressive.

I had some frustrations as my main dark site was muddy and though I could get to it with my 4WD, my observing companions could not. So I called them since I was the first out to the site and we opted for a secondary site and I got there at dusk to set up, after my friends had already set up. After completing setup and collimation, I went to work on open clusters in Puppis and after doing these for a couple of hours, I was tired so I took a break. I then went to work in Hydra on some objects there and decided as I looked up and noticed that it was late in the evening, and both Mars and Leo were up high in the sky so I decided to work on a project that I really want to sink my teeth into. This project is to take some of the Messier and other brighter objects and sketch them from a really excellent dark site and then sketch them again at home in the backyard under light pollution. The goal is to hopefully have some newer people and perhaps some others compare and contrast the sketches to see the difference in detail objects have at a dark site versus when they are observed in a light pollution zone.

So this night I picked several of the galaxies in Leo and in this case, I was pleased with how the sketch of Messier 96 came out, which I present here. I’m still working on the Mellish method though I much prefer it overall then any other method I’ve tried. Now I need to sketch M96 from my backyard if the weather will permit! Skies this night were an Antoniadi II when the sketch was made and the LM was about 6.6 to 6.7 I would estimate (I left my thermometer and my SQM at home along with several other items. It was one of those nights initially). The scope was my Orion XX14i with a 10mm and 7mm Pentax.

Hi,

In attachment you can find sketch of famous Triangulum Galaxy (M33)

Short description:

Object Name: M33 – galaxy in Triangulum
Object Type: spiral galaxy
Location: Jodłów – small village in southern Poland (picture made during StarParty Jodłów 2011)
Date: 01.10.2011
Media: graphite pencil, white paper, color invert
Telescope: Columbus 320UL (320/1384 Newtonian) + Explore Scientific 30mm
Seeing: 3/5 (average)
Transparency: 2/5 (good)
NELM: 6,4 mag

I think that no additional explanations are needed because all of us know this object. Beside M31 it is most popular galaxy in northern sky.
It is really easy to catch, even in small binocular but if you want to see more than small mist you need 10” or bigger mirror and really dark sky (min 6mag). Then you can observe spiral arms and inner star clouds.

Super Plössl 20mm eyepiece

That was a cloudless, hot, calm night. The seeing was good, Antoniadi 2, and the naked eye limit magnitude was pickering 5.5. I observed a barred spiral galaxy for the first time, it was M83. I could see all the features sketched only by averted vision, because with direct vision it looked like a simple spiral with a bright core. It was a fantastic experience, so I had to register it. I hope you like my sketch, I loved that moment. For about one hour I just couldn’t take my eye from the eyepiece. That’s the result.
