The Full Veil

Veil Nebula
Veil Nebula

Dear ASOD, hereby sending my sketch of the Veil nebula.

I wanted to sketch the whole Veil ever since I first saw this breathtaking nebula, but it’s so huge that I was never brave enough to give it a start. Some weeks ago I decided to give it a try, and here’s the result.

It took about 2 hours to finish, with all stars and nebulous areas drawn at the eyepiece in one session. As I’m observing from a very steep valley, my horizon is very high, so it was a real race with the time – perhaps that’s why a lot of stars are missing from the “less important” regions.

The sketch covers an area of about 4 times 1.5 FoV’s, done with a 12″ dobsonian, Baader Hyperion 21mm EP (71x), and a cheap O-III filter. Used an A/4 sketchbook, B and 5B pencils. Inverted on computer. Date/time: 08.27.2011 01:00-03:00 UT. Location: Nádasdladány, Hungary. SQM: 21.16m/arcsec^2.

Clear skies, Ferenc

The Eagle Has Landed

Messier 16
Messier 16 - The Eagle Nebula

Hi all,

HOORAY! A clear dark sky!

This was my first visit to Wiruna, the dark sky site of the Astronomical Society of New South Wales (many thanks to Alex Comino for organizing my stay there 😉 ). This was the stomping ground of Scott Mellish, and it was such a great experience to meet some of his friends up there. He is so sorely missed.

Conditions started marvelously. Using my 17.5” dob, my first squiz of M16, had me gasping “There it is! There’s the Eagle!” So clear was the dark pillar system. So much so that I could also make out the distinct highlighted leading edge of the pillars! Even with an OIII filter! So cool!

This sketch of the Eagle took around two hours to complete.

It was also my first use of another treasure of an eyepiece, a Unitron 16mm Konig eyepiece. What a marvelous eyepiece! Not as long in eyerelief as newer eyepieces, but the image is one of the brightest I’ve seen, and easily has a 70* FOV.

Object: M16, The Eagle Nebula

Scope: 17.5” f/4.5 dob, push pull

Gear: Unitron 16mm Konig, 125X, + OIII filter, 33.6’ AFOV

Date: 2’nd June, 2011

Location: Wiruna, Ilford, Australia

Materials: White pastel, black & white charcoal pencils and white ink on A4 size black paper

Cheers,

Alex M.

Object name:Eastern veil nebulae(NGC6992/NGC6995),RA 20h 56m 24s Dec +31d 43m 00s
Object type:Supernova remnant(Nebulae).
Location:Seyed abad-Firuzkuh-Iran(35º 38′ N , 52º 22′ E) .
Date:2011/07/01.
Time:2:30 local time (+3:30 GMT).
Media:Graphic pencil white paper-inverted in photoshop.
Equipment:200mm Dobsonian telescope-f/6-focal length 1200, Sky glow filter.
Eyepiece:30mm, Field:80º.
Conditions:Clear with some cirrus clouds.

The Veil Nebula was discovered visually by William Herschel in 1784 with his 18-inch reflecting telescope. The visible portions of the Veil Nebula appear to be segments of an expanding gas cloud. The gas cloud is believed to be the remnant of a supernova explosion, possibly 30,000 to 40,000 years ago.

The Lord of the White Night

In my region in Northern Poland the Sun during the summer solstice does not come down even 12 degrees beneath horizon
However, the bright nebulae such M57 are still nicely visible.

Yesterday, before the moon rising …. I decided to sketch The Ring in power 167x. I used the Super Plössl UWA SW 58 with GSO nebular filter and Newton Sky-watcher 12 ”

I tried attentively to stare at the “pale disc”, it took me about 20-25minut . In the middle of this structure are week star or something else. I saw something like ghosts inside!

Yours, Robert
