Hi everyone! This was the first sketch I made in the year. It was a wonderful dark night, the weather was nice and the Carina constellation was in an ideal elevation to observe it through what i call “my little sky window”, that is, my 12×50 binoculars. I always enjoy a lot the whole area of Argos which I think is the most impressive in binoculars. Thank you so much!!!!

Vega and Epsilon Lyrae

I chose Vega in the constellation of Lyra as my first sketch study, as it was the brightest star in my visible night sky (… and 3rd brightest star in the Northern hemisphere night sky after Sirius and Arcturus). I threw the towel in on several sketches before arriving to this one. It sure is different to sketch in the dark! My first attempts had severely mis-plotted star fields, and even though a sketch of the night sky is never 100% perfect, it wasn’t even looking close to what I was seeing in my field of view! An hour and a half later, I was satisfied enough to call this one my first.

I was able to spot the famous “double double” stars of Epsilon Lyrae very easily, as well as a light blue tint to Vega, and some various stars with a light tint of orange. Even though winter is coming along, I could still see part of the “Summer Triangle” asterism with Altair and Deneb.

Moon and Jupiter – November 28, 2012

On the night of 11/28/2012 the Full Moon was shining brightly with Jupiter as its companion. The sketch was done while looking through an old (circa 1960’s) pair of Tasco 8-15×50 binoculars which I recently had refurbished. I used the binocs at 15x for the sketch which was done in Warren county NJ, USA on a laptop computer.

Comet PanSTARRS: Panoramica e Particolare

Hello Artists,after a long time with rain(GRRRRR!!), I made two sketches about Comet PanStarrs!! I go out from work and I go to hill near Little town of Saltara. Very cold temperature and light icely wind. The clouds covered the zone but ,finally they go out from the horizon. I see the comet under the rest of gray clouds and, on blue paper i made the first sketch with bino 10×50. In the same time I take my big bino 25×100 on tripod and made the second sketch, with pencil on black
paper. Unfortunately the comet was very low and the sketch was very difficult to made.

The Twilight Colors of PanSTARRS

Object Name: Comet PanSTARRS C/2011 L4
Object Type: Comet
Location: Near Grant, AL, USA
Date: Feb. 13, 2013, Approx. 7:35PM CDT
Equipment: 4-inch (100×25) Binoculars, Red Backlit Panel, Soft Pencils, and Tracing Paper. Used multiple layers for different colors to assemble drawing using the computer.

Description:
Comet PanStarrs was only visible for a short time on the 13th (about 1/2 hour), but we were able to sketch several individual layers to assemble a color drawing of the Comet in the Sunset/Twilight. We were going to take an astrophoto, but realized that a drawing might work better, given the twilight. Glad we switched! The white coma and red dust tail contrasted strongly in the view.

Marathon M24

Hello!

I made a marathon sketch in the past month; I drew the M24 and the environment. It was very hard work, but it is also interesting. In the drawing are visible these objects: M24 star-cloud, NGC6603 the popular open cluster in M24, M18 open cluster, M17 Omega nebula, NGC6561 diffuse nebula, Ic1283 diffuse nebula, NGC6589 open cluster, Sharpless-35 diffuse nebula and Barnard 92-93 dark nebulae. My next target of the Scutum star-cloud… 🙂

C/2004 Q2 (Machholz) and Messier 45

Comet C/2004 Q2 (Machholz) and the Pleiades

Hey Artists!

I send you one of my observations of C/ 2004, Q2, Machholz
passing the well known open cluster Pleiades (M. 45).
The comet was a splended and interesting object to see in my 10 x 50 binos.
with over 90 deg. splitted dust and gastail and greenish coma. Info on sketch.
I used pen and pencil on white paper and inverted.
Location : Trondheim, Norway.
