Comet West

Comet C/1975 V1 (West) / 1975n
Comet C/1975 V1 (West) / 1975n

Hey sketchers!

This time I send you an old but interesting observation of a break-up of
nucleus in three parts. This was the bright and splended comet West (1976).
In 50x magn., I could only see a streak in the bright coma, but with power of
166x, I could see the splitting parts of 7. to 8. mag.. Info on the sketch.
I look foreward to comet ISON, but I hope it will survive the perihel!!

location: Trondheim, Norway.
I used watercolor crayons on black paper.

Best wishes and clear sky from Per-Jonny Bremseth.

Hey Artists!

In this year of bright comets and while waiting for comet ISON, I will
mainly send sketches of these objects to show what can be seen in the coma!
Comet IKEYA – ZHANG was a bright and activ comet which showed interesting
structures in the coma. I observed before it was dark (twilight) to see the jets !
This comet is the same one as Hevelius observed in the year 1660.
Info on the sketch.
I used crayons (watercolor) on black paper.
Loc.: Trondheim, Norway.

Best wishes and clear sky from Per-Jonny Bremseth.

PanSTARRS and the Andromeda Galaxy

C/2011 L4 (PanSTARRS) and M31
C/2011 L4 (PanSTARRS) and M31

I made this sketch using my 15×70 binoculars at 1:45 UTC on 4/5/2013. I was just able to get both objects in the the field of view. The comet was brighter than M31, particularly in the core, but smaller. The comet’s tail was noticeably wider than it was when I observed it a few weeks earlier on 3/13. It was an interesting conjunction but was hard to get a lot of detail, M32 and M110 were not even visible, because they were both about 10-15 degrees from the horizon.

Hale-Bopp’s Inner Coma

C/1995 O1 (Hale-Bopp)
C/1995 O1 (Hale-Bopp)

Hei Artists!

Not many artists on ASOD make sketches of the structures in the inner coma of comets.
Very interesting things may happen in the light coma, which is difficult to show photographic.
The spirals in the comet Hale-Bopp were sharp (as a painting) visually, but at best diffuse on
photos! Therefore it is very importent to document visually and on a sketch.
By using high power on the telescope you can observe details (jets) near the nucleus, and
over a period of time other interesting phenomenon, the most dramatic : you may discover a
breaking of the nucleus!
Such structures is also best seen against a lighter sky, as with observations of Venus.
Remember: Many things can happen in the head of comet ISON later this year!!
Back in 1976 , I could observe the splitting in comet West (3 parts)!
I used watercolor crayons for the sketch.
loc. : Trondheim, Norway.

Clear sky and best wishes from Per-Jonny Bremseth!

Hello friends artists,
this is my sketch of the Panstarrs, one of the comet of 2013. The tail of the comet was long enough and the head was very light. This is my first comet and I liked it so much. I observed it with a 100 mm telescope, at 7,30 p.m. It was visible with naked eye like a 2 magnitude star. Moreover I observed it with a 20×80 binocular, and it appeared equal, more or less.

Hope you like this sketch! And I hope you understand my english!
