Comet C/2014 Q2 (Lovejoy) and the globular star cluster M79 in the constellation Lepus

M79 and Comet Lovejoy in Lepus

I have been monitoring comet Lovejoy (C/2014 Q2) for the past several nights and on this occasion they both shared the same field of view at130 power. I was using my daughter’s 10 inch Orion Dobsonian telescope and was able to capture this sketch under clear skies and good seeing conditions. The observation site was in eastern Mesa, Arizona with a good view to the south. The comet can be seen much brighter and larger in angular size than than 8.5 magnitude globular cluster M 79. This was a pleasing view at the eyepiece with the comet showing a hint of green color. I switched to 48 power and a wider field of view for the sketch.

Just started the winter solstice and wanted to celebrate it!

Waiting for the chance to see the comet decide to go to the rooftop, the map says it’s 15 degrees high. I hope that the fog has not risen much …

The humidity is very high but its clear and I can see lot of stars south of CMa … looks like I’ll be lucky.

I pointed to the area between south CMa and Columba with binoculars 12×80 (4.2º), no need to look further: there it is. His precious coma highlighting against the background of stars…

The field of binoculars is beautiful, the comet is framed in a triangle of stars and I can see a thin tail with indirect vision that goes north. It’s longer than I expected to see, I make a mark on the picture to know the length of the tail I see (arrow).
I make a drawing with the position of the comet and the reference stars and the size of the coma and tail to the correct scale I see.

Lovejoy – one year after

Usually, weather in December is quite poor – at least in Germany. However, in 2013 we had cloudless skies for more than a week. So, before going to work, I was able to make sketches of the nice comet C/2013 R1 (Lovejoy) using a pair of 16×70 binoculars.
In order to combine all sketches, I used the freeware program Cartes du Ciel to generate the starfield through which the comet wandered.
Since the comet came close to M13, I put the globular in also. The sketch I made of the cluster is some two years old, but I suppose it does not look a lot differently now 🙂
Observing conditions were not particularly good but also not very bad. Faintest star usually ranged from 6m0 to 6m2 except for December 16th and 17th when the moon was still above the horizon, brightening the sky quite badly. Therefore, the comet looked a lot less spectacular.

Comet C/1996 B2 (Hyakutake)

Hey ASOD!

Interesting structures was observed in B2 (Hyakutake) on two nights 24. and 25. March 1996
in high power of the inner coma! My two sketches shows the fragmenting of the nucleus over
2 days. I used my 20.3 cm. SCT. F/ 10 at 166x.
Some days before, on 20. March, the false nucleus was stellar with no structures observed.
On 21. March, I could see a 2 arcmin. very thin spine tailward. Read my info on sketches!
I used colorcrayons on black paper.

Comet C/2013 R1 Lovejoy

Hi Asod! Last night I woke up at 5.00am to observe Comet Lovejoy. I couldn’t see it with naked eye (I think because I observed from city), but it was very bright! I observed it at 90x and 42x and this was the best magnification; nucleus was very compact and more bright than tail. It’s the first comet I’ve ever seen, just wonderful!

Hey ASOD!

I send my first observation of a comet , Bennett 1970. This drawing is an
original one seen in 10 x 50 binos.
This early morning the sky was hazy, only the brightest stars were seen.
After some time, I could see a comet over the hills!
I used my 4″ new. refl. to observe it first. I saw fontains in the coma, but
did not manage to draw it on paper!!
Instead, I made this sketch seen in binos! Info on my sketch!
The sketch was made with pencil on white paper (inverted).

Notes: The comet was in the constellation of Cassiopeia. It appeared slightly elongated but I could not see a tail. The coma appeared a light green colour.
